ROCK HILL, S.C. (May 29, 2024) – The Carolina Ascent FC USL W League team earned its third straight USL W League win after defeating the Charlotte Eagles 5-0 at Manchester Meadows Park on Wednesday evening. Carolina Ascent is back in action on Sunday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. against South Georgia Tormenta FC at Tormenta Stadium. The match can be streamed for free on SportsEngine Play.
Carolina Ascent scored the first goal of the match in the 10th minute. #23 Renee Guion collected the ball and put it in the back of the net after #24 Kat González’s corner kick took a few deflections and stayed within the Eagles six-yard box.
The second goal of the match came from #30 Audrey Harding in the 15th minute. She chipped the goalkeeper from outside of the penalty area on a pass from Guion.
#24 Kat González scored her third goal of the season in the 26th minute from a direct free kick. Just outside of the penalty area, González shot the ball over the wall of defenders and placed the ball right into the top corner.
Harding notched a brace, with her second goal of the match and season, coming in the 35th minute. After fighting for a ball in the penalty area, Harding touched the ball around a defender and sent her shot past the goalkeeper.
In the second half, #20 Sophie Sipprell was assisted by #18 Olivia Simon to put Carolina Ascent up five goals. Simon turned her defender in the box, and she found Sipprell making a run through towards goal. Sipprell placed the ball in the top right corner of the net.
Carolina Ascent goalkeepers #1 Sejal Johnson and #40 Addy Holgorsen both contributed to the third clean sheet of the season.
“We recognize that there is a lot of strength in our conference,” Head Coach Erika Duncan explained. “We know that we are going to face some tough opposition, so I think being able to get those clear opportunities and score more goals allows us to go into the next game understanding and really trusting in what we can do.”
