
CHARLOTTE, NC (May 11, 2025) – #6 Maria Tapia scored five and #11 Sadie Peterson scored four as Carolina Ascent’s W-League team reached double digits in their 2025 W-League opener, beating NC Fusion 10-3.
Peterson thought she gave Carolina Ascent an early lead, but her goal was brought back as the assistant referee raised his flag for offsides.
NC Fusion took the lead in the 10th minute in their only attempt on goal in the first half.
Carolina Ascent was quick to answer. Forward #6 Maria Tapia got on the end of a #3 Dempsey McMahon cross and cooly finished to tie the game in the 17th minute.
Carolina Ascent controlled the majority of the first 45 minutes in NC Fusion’s half and ended the half with a bang.
After being robbed of a goal early in the match, Peterson put her stamp on the game, scoring an unthinkable four-minute hat trick before the break.
Her first goal came off a feed from #10 Annika Wohner, her second from #12 Milla Syska, and her third goal from a pretty pass from #7 Manuela Baptista Filipe. All three goals came on passes slipping Peterson through and all three times the Clemson University commit made zero mistake.
Carolina Ascent led 4-1 at the end of the first half after their flurry of goals in the final minutes.
Carolina Ascent goalkeeper #40 Reese DeJong made her strongest save of the night in the 52nd minute, getting her fingertips on a shot heading into the corner.
After NC Fusion cut the lead to 4-2 in the 57th minute, Syska got on the scoreboard, volleying one in from in-close.
Peterson scored her fourth of the game as Tapia set her up in the 64th minute.
After NC Fusion got their third goal of the game in the 70th minute, Tapia took over. The Huntersville, North Carolina native bagged four consecutive goals in the final 20 minutes, giving her five on the night.
Tapia’s fifth tally, coming in the 90th minute, was thundered home from the top of the box, getting the home side to the ten-goal mark.
Carolina Ascent will continue their W-League season at American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 17 at 12:00 PM against South Carolina United.
