BOUNCE-BACK RESULT OVER FORT LAUDERDALE
After a disappointing loss in the home opener, the Ascent bounced back in a big way with a 3-0 victory over Fort Lauderdale United. Jill Aguilera kicked things off 10 minutes in after she lofted a long over the top ball from Jenna Butler over an out-of-position Haley Craig for a 1-0 lead. Carolina earned a bizarre penalty later after a misunderstanding from the FTL backline and Mia Corbin converted to double the lead. Corbin then assisted Audrey Coleman nine minutes later as the hosts extended the lead to 3-0, which they protected through the rest of the match for the second clean sheet of the season.
BACKSTOPPING HER WAY TO HISTORY
Sydney Martinez passed Meagan McClelland for the most clean sheets in club history with 10 after blanking Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK PERFORMANCE
Mia Corbin earned Player of the Week honors for Week 4 after her goal and assist against Fort Lauderdale. She becomes the first Ascent player to win the award.
SCOUTING LEXINGTON
Lexington has only played two matches so far and sits sixth in the table with a 1-1-0 record. They opened their season up against Brooklyn FC and thumped the New York side to the tune of 3-0. After a scoreless first half, Catherine Barry and Addie McCain struck within three minutes of each other to build a 2-0 lead, before a dagger by Hannah White in the 82′ put the match out of reach of the visitors.
The defending champs then welcomed DC Power to town and fell behind in the first half after the league’s second top scorer Loza Abera converted a penalty just before half. Emily Colton added another in the 68′ to double the visitor’s lead. A missed penalty by McCain dampened Lexington’s hopes and despite a stoppage time goal by Mac Midgely, they dropped all three points. They now host the Ascent in their third straight home match to open the season in the Gainbridge Super League Match of the Week.
Lexington sported an 8-2-4 record at home last season, and look to continue their success in front of their fans in their title defense this season. Kosuke Kimura returns for his second season as Head Coach of Lexington and has a 15-4-11 record so far at the helm.
