BUTLER SAVES THE DAY IN CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH
The Ascent headed to Lexington for the Gainbridge Super League Match of the Month and used a late Jenna Butler header to keep their perfect away record intact in a 1-0 victory. In the two sides first meeting since the Super League Final last season, an even match played out with neither team being able to finish their chances until the 88th minute. The Ascent earned a corner from the right side that Emily Morris stepped up to take. Morris served up a ball over the crowd and onto the head of Butler at the back post, who just snuck her header past Ryan Campbell at the near post to earn all three points for the visitors. Sydney Martinez posted her second consecutive clean sheet, making five saves en route to earning a Player of the Week nomination for Week 5.
KEEPING IT CLEAN
Sydney Martinez’s second-straight clean sheet gives her a league-leading three on the season. She also tops the league leaderboard with saves at 24, sitting six saves above second place.
FAMILIAR FACES
The Ascent have three players that have plied their trade with Brooklyn before coming to Carolina. Martinez, Mackenzie George and Luana Grabias all played for Brooklyn FC in the inaugural Super League season in 24/25, before moving to the Ascent ahead of the 25/26 campaign. Grabias was 2nd on Brooklyn in goals that season with five, while George sat in 3rd place with four. Martinez only conceded eight goals in 11 appearances and posted four clean sheets during her time with Brooklyn.
SCOUTING BROOKLYN
Brooklyn has had a rough go of things to start the season, dropping their first four matches before finally getting on the board this past week with a 3-2 win over Sporting Jax. After only scoring one goal over their first four matches, they put three past Jacksonville’s defense while allowing under three goals for only the second time this season: a formula that finally earned them points for the first time all season.
Catherine Zimmerman put Brooklyn on the board in the 5th minute, the first time they have drawn first blood all year. Tziarra King doubled the lead just 5 minutes later, before league scoring leader Baylee DeSmit pulled one back before half for the visitors. Zimmerman bagged a brace in the 82nd minute, effectively rendering Sporting Jax’s last-second goal useless for a 3-2 victory.
Brooklyn has yet to score on the road this season while conceding seven in three losses away from New York. Zimmerman’s brace put her atop the scoring leaderboard for the squad with two, while midfielder Jillian Shimkin drives the play and leads the squad with nine chances created thus far. Additionally, goalkeeper Breanna Norris sits third in the league in saves with 14.
