ROCK HILL, S.C. (May 22, 2024) – The Carolina Ascent FC USL W League team earned its first-ever win in club history with a 4-0 victory over Wake FC at Manchester Meadows Park on Wednesday evening. Catch Carolina Ascent in action again on Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. against the Charlotte Eagles at Charlotte Christian School.
Carolina Ascent took the lead in the 13th minute with the first goal in club W League history by #24 Kat González. She struck a free kick from outside the penalty area which bounced off the defensive wall to her feet, and González slotted her second attempt into the back of the net.
The hosts had another dangerous chance in the 22nd minute as #30 Audrey Harding carried the ball from the defensive half to the attacking penalty area, but her pass to #10 Manuela Baptista was weighted a bit too much and was scooped up by the Wake FC goalkeeper.
González scored her second goal of the match with a long-range, central strike in the 24th minute.
Only moments before halftime, Carolina Ascent extended the lead to 3-0. Harding passed a through-ball to the feet of #20 Sophie Sipprell who calmly placed a shot into the corner netting.
The first dangerous chance of the second half for Carolina Ascent was a breakaway for #25 Kennedy Jones. After her shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, #5 Sam Whitaker recovered the rebound and took a shot which hit the outside of the side netting.
Just 15 seconds after entering the pitch as a substitute, #6 Ava Tretheway scored with an assist credited to Jones.
In the 89th minute, goalkeeper #41 Reese DeJong made an outstretched diving save to secure the first clean sheet of the season.
