ASCENT EXTEND LEAD ATOP LEAGUE TABLE WITH WIN OVER DC
Last time out, the Ascent were held to a scoreless draw on the road at Fort Lauderdale United. The Ascent piled on the chances early, with Mia Corbin rattling the crossbar six minutes in. The best chance came in the 25h minute, when Mackenzie George sent a through ball that found Rylee Baisden in behind the Fort Lauderdale backline. Baisden’s low-driven shot was saved by a diving Haley Craig, who recovered in time to also deny Shea Groom’s rebound attempt. The Ascent won 11 corners and registered 13 shot attempts in the first half alone. Fort Lauderdale grew into the match after the break and started to contain Carolina’s offense much better than they did in the first half. The hosts even created two dangerous chances of their own, both of which were stopped by Sydney Martinez, who notched her third straight shutout and seventh overall this season. Ava Cook came close to finding a winner with a pair of dangerous shots after being subbed on, but neither effort found the back of the net as the points were shared at Amerant Bank Field.
STIFLING OPPONENTS’ ATTACK
Martinez registered her third straight shutout and seventh overall this season against Fort Lauderdale United. She sits second on the league’s all-time shutout leaderboard with 18, one behind her Ascent teammate Hope Hisey. The Ascent’s seven shutouts this season lead the Gainbridge Super League, more than doubling Lexington SC who sits in second with three.
QUEENS OF THE SET PIECE
Nine of the Ascent’s 17 goals this season have come from set pieces. One of those came in the September 11 matchup vs Lexington, when Jenna Butler’s 88th minute header secured Carolina all three points on the road.
BREAKING THE ICE
The Ascent have grown a knack for opening the scoring, scoring first in seven of nine matches where a goal was scored this season. This has been a trend against Lexington as well, with the Ascent scoring first in the last eight meetings between the two sides.
HISTORIC STREAKS COMES TO AN END
The Ascent had scored in 22 consecutive matches, dating back to February 21 vs Dallas Trinity FC, before Fort Lauderdale kept the league-leaders off the scoresheet last Thursday. That was the longest streak in club history. Carolina’s 10-game road winning streak was also snapped, the longest in league history.
SCOUTING LEXINGTON
Lexington currently sits third in the Gainbridge Super League table with a 4-3-2 record with a +5 goal differential. They have posted a 1-1-1 record away from home this season and boast the third best scoring offense and third best scoring defense in the league.
Last time out, Lexington battled to a draw with Sporting Jax in a six-goal thriller. Lexington struck twice quickly, building a 2-0 lead behind an 11th minute Sarah Griffith goal and a 16th minute Catherine Barry tally. Ashlyn Puerta responded two minutes later for the visitors to cut the lead in half. Addie McCain restored the two-goal advantage in the 45h minute, but Paige Kenton scored a minute later as Lexington took a 3-2 lead into the half. An own goal by Lexington in the 85th minute handed Sporting Jax a point in the table as the hosts missed a valuable chance to jump their opponents in the table and make up ground on the Ascent in the Player’s Shield race.
Lexington goalkeeper Ryan Campbell sits second in the league in shutouts with three, and third in saves with 29. Lexington’s high-powered scoring attack is paced by Barry and McCain, with them scoring five and four goals respectively. Griffith and Hannah White both have scored a pair of goals this season for the Kentucky-based side. Barry, Alyssa Bourgeois and Allyson Brown sit atop the team leaderboard with two assists this season, while Barry and McCain lead the team in chances created with 16 a piece. They have not won a game on the road since a 1-0 victory at Sporting Jax on September 20.
