ASCENT CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH WIN OVER LEXINGTON SC
Last time out, the Ascent used Emily Moxley’s first career goal to keep the unbeaten run going and beat Lexington SC 1-0. The first 30 minutes of the match flew by without much danger being created due to the two stingy defenses stifling their opposition’s attack. However, the Ascent broke the ice with their first, and only, shot of the game. Shea Groom shuttled the ball outside of the box before playing the ball to Rylee Baisden. Baisden touched it into the path of the darting Moxley, who coolly finished into the side netting for a 1-0 lead. Carolina only allowed one shot on target in the first half which did not trouble Sydney Martinez at all. Martinez was called upon twice in the second half and came up with big saves on both occasions for fourth straight shutout to bring her total on the season to eight. The win clinched Carolina’s third straight postseason appearance, making them the first Gainbridge Super League club to accomplish the feat.
A SPOTLESS OCTOBER
The Ascent backline enjoyed a dominant month of October, posting a shutout in all four matches played. The four consecutive shutouts puts the Ascent at eight on the season, more than double any other club. With the shutout against Lexington, Martinez earned her 19th career Super League shutout, tying her with teammate Hope Hisey atop the league’s all-time shutout leaderboard. The next shutout by either member of Carolina’s goalie room would make them the first goalkeeper in league history to reach 20 shutouts.
QUEENS OF THE SET PIECE
Nine of the Ascent’s 18 goals this season have come from set pieces. One of those came on September 19 against Brooklyn, when Groom nodded home a Corbin corner kick in the 63rd minute to give the Ascent a 1-0 victory.
LOOK TO CONTINUE SERIES DOMINANCE
The Ascent have posted a dominant 6-0-2 record in the all-time series vs Brooklyn FC, dating back to the Super League’s inaugural season. The Ascent won all three meetings last year and took the first meeting this year in Charlotte to improve their win streak against the New York side to four.
ROAD WARRIORS
Carolina has continued their trend of road success this season, posting a 4-0-1 record in games away from American Legion Memorial Stadium. They have outscored their opponents 8-1 in five road games this season.
SCOUTING BROOKLYN
Brooklyn FC currently sits sixth in the Gainbridge Super League table with a 3-5-2 record and a -8 goal differential. However, Brooklyn has posted a 3-1-1 record at home this season and is 2-0-2 in their four matches since losing to Carolina on September 19.
Last time out, Brooklyn drew Sporting Jax in an eight goal thriller down in Florida to capture their first point away all season. The visitors built a 2-0 lead only 25 minutes in when Jillian Shimkin assisted Catherine Zimmerman and Ashlyn Miller on goals scored just 11 minutes apart. Jacksonville responded quickly, notching two goals within eight minutes of Brooklyn’s second to knot things up heading into the break. Jackie Richards put Brooklyn back in front in the 56th minute, and finished off Shimkin’s third assist of the night just the minute later to restore their two goal cushion. However, an Ashlyn Puerta brace in the final 25 minutes of the match meant the points were shared in Jacksonville.
Shimkin’s three assist performance moved her up to a tie for second in the league leaderboard for assists while her 21 chances created also sits her second in that leaderboard. Zimmerman paces the squad with four goals, while Richards and Tziarra King both have chipped in with two a piece. Before the offensive slugfest in Jacksonville this past weekend, Brooklyn had tightened up defensively as of late, only allowing two goals in the four games before that result. They had allowed 13 goals in the first five matches of the season prior to that stretch.
